Forensics to prove Big Foot?

by team UAB, kpf

Is this really what Forensic Science is coming to? I doubt it, but some scientists dont really know where to draw the line between real and fairytale!

Yet a small but vociferous number of scientists remain undeterred. Risking ridicule from other academics, they propose that there's enough forensic evidence to warrant something that has never been done: a comprehensive, scientific study to determine if the legendary primate actually exists..."Given the scientific evidence that I have examined, I'm convinced there's a creature out there that is yet to be identified," said Jeff Meldrum, a professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University in Pocatello.

What are your thoughts on this notion?

If they were to actually conduct a study to prove Bigfoot's existence, they would most likely have to have concrete evidence that could not be disputed for anyone to actually believe it. Methods need to be used that cannot be disputed. I believe that a non-biased group of scientists should be hired to conduct the work on behalf of the scientists that actually want to do this study. That would ensure that the group is not bringing personal bias into their work. Also, This reminds me of a show I recently saw on the history channel, in which scientists proved that the biblical story of the exodus actually happened using carbon dating, geology, and things of that sort. If news of a successful bigfoot investigation got out, I have no doubt that this would spark a series of similar investigations into other areas, such as ghosts, the lochness monster, etc.

I have to agree with JMM. There would have to be concrete evidence proving that Big Foot exists. This has been nothing but a big joke for years and no one has ever been able to prove this myth because there is no evidence except for some foot prints that can be made. I think there would have to be a body or some kind of droppings to prove that this creature exists.

I think that instead of forensic scientists focusing on myths and folklore, they should allocate their time to the unsolved crimes still plaguing many families. Instead of disputing the existance of Bigfoot, how about putting the Natalee Holloway case to rest?

If Bigfoot exists, acquiring a living or dead specimen would be of immense interest to not only scientists but to all of humanity. If some number of forensic professionals believe they can make a case for Bigfoot's existence, I certainly don't see the harm in pursuing it. If their science is no good, people will continue to ignore the Bigfoot myth just as they have for the last half-century(?). If nothing else, failed attempts of a higher profile may discourage future efforts.

I think bigfoot is real, and very scary. I know bigfoot is real because I have seen him make appearances in those beef jerkey commercials. So, be careful what you say.

If forensic scientist could actually prove the "Big Foot" myth that would be quite interesting,to know that something like that live on this planet. In the mean time I think we should study things like solving unidentified crimes.

i agree that there are probably better things to do with ones time, but if these scientists want a fun, nerdy hobby...

I liked TDS comment about the droppings. Those guys should start scooping and running some DNA tests.

Realistically in order for there to be forensic tests, there would have to be something left behind by bigfoot. Do they have hair/fur, footprints, droppings, actual high quality film? If they did you would think that someone would have announced that on the news. For those interested in something less sciency there is a very cute short story entitled In me own words: The autobiography of bigfoot.

I think that if scientist began researching the existence of Bigfoot then there would be so many people that were making up fake evidence. I think that this would cause several problems. I strongly agree with KRC. Forensic scientist should be focusing more on all the cold case files that are out there from years ago that can possibly be solved now because of new technology.

I can imagine Bigfoot trace evidence would be easy to find. He is an 8ft tall ape that runs through the forest so i assume IF he was real then he would eventually leave hair, blood, nails, food, poop, or some sort of evidence that could be traced. However in the past 40 years that has never happened and it probably never will. Sometimes its hard for people to understand that Bigfoot, like the Lochness Monster, is just a folklore legend made for entertainment. I guess sometimes even scientists can get caught up in the imaginery

So, maybe myth of Bigfoot has been confirmed. How do we know one way or the other? Maybe it has been proven and Bigfoot ate the person who found him! No, really, I agree with most of the other opinions. If it really exists, there would be evidence left behind as with any animal. There would be hair, skin, nails, droppings, etc. There would also have to be more than one or surely Bigfoot would have outlived his lifespan by now.

Well, i think everyone is in agreement, bigfoot doesn't exist. I think it is remotely possible for something to exist and not be detected, but bigfoot sounds more legend than real. The trouble is that it is a lot harder to prove something does not exist. So the believers can never really be disproved.
