Company to Provide Forensic Services to Army

found by troym; comments by blogger jgl

Does anyone know how these contracts will work? Will these companies be hiring scientists to complete the work or just serving as a middle man sending the work through to already existing private labs?

In other words, will any forensic lab jobs be created/destroyed because of this?

American Systems Corp., Analytic Services Inc. and Ideal Innovations Inc., have won a multiple award contract to compete for approximately $145 million in task orders to provide forensic services to the Army...

...The support will cover the forensic disciplines of nuclear DNA, serology, forensic anthropology, digital evidence, forensic toxicology and forensic pathology, among others, according to a Sept. 28 announcement from American Systems.

This is a major concern to those of us who practice in the military courts.
USACIL is ASCLAD certified. They are pretty good and reliable (and I say that as a defense counsel).
They did have a problem with a DNA examiner a few years ago. But USACIL has never had the kinds of problems identified recently by the NSF review.
This is troubling news that a private contractor is bidding on the lives and freedom of service-members.
Sincerely,

I find this pretty interesting that there are going to be Forensics Programs implemented into Army regimines. My only concern would be that if so much money will be allocated to the Army for these purposes, will that affect current Forensics jobs that are available now??

This was an extremely interesting article. I loved learning that they will be providing Forensic Services to our military. My question is will this take away funding from our Forensic jobs that are available now or will this provide more job oppurtunities for either a new MOS in the military or a new position for someone to apply for in the Forensic field?

After reading this article it sounds like there will be more civilian forensic jobs available. The jobs will stay within the private sector but primary be servicing the military. The contract sounds similar to a weapons contract where a private weapons manufacturer produces the weapons but the military uses. In the case of the forensic labs and scientist, the miltary will be collecting the evidence and the labs will be the only ones handling it and processing it.

This article is really interesting, but also a bit disturbing. I would think that our armed forces would already have an forensics system in place such that they would not need to contract out for such services. Why can't the armed forces begin training forensic scientists as much as they do doctors and provide more jobs directly in the armed forces rather than contracting to companies who may or may not be reliable.

In my opinion, we will gain more job opportunities because of the this. At the same time, I think more people in Forensics will be hesitant to take this job in helping the Army because of fear of what the Army is known for and also because it is not the "normal" job in the Forensics field.
